TERRIBLE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE FROM VIRGIN MOBILE

Hello

I moved to New York back in May of this year, and tried to cancel my phone contract right before I'd left (18 months into it) but was told that wouldn't be possible. I was told that I needed to continue paying for the phone and plan until it expired (after 24 months). They told me that they'd made a note on the system to have it automatically cancel on October 12, 2011.

I just got my latest bill and it seems to run through to November. Can you please confirm that it did indeed end on the 12th of October, and/or adjust the bill to reflect these costs?

If however it didn't automatically shut off, can you please do that and confirm that this action has been taken? I will be a little annoyed at the person who I'd spoken to previously (but of course I can't remember their name). But that's a minor point, what I'm really concerned with is not being forced to pay for something I did not agree to, and don't even use.

I need this to be taken care of before the next bill comes through, which of course I would 100% refuse to pay.

Let me apologise for any confusion and inconvenience this matter may have caused you. However, please be advised that we do not accept advanced requests for a cancellation of the a service. Even if your commitment ends, without a request to cancel the service, your plan will still continue.

No worries. I can definitely help you cancel your service with us as you have already moved overseas. As you no longer are under a commitment, you just need to settle the latest pro-rated charges that shall yet to be generated. Once cancelled, your bill will be generated as usual on your next billing cycle date: 3rd of the next month

By the way, please be advised that you still have an $85 overdue amount from your bill number 81643130123 which was due on 20/10/2011. Because of this, a $10 Late Payment Fee has already been charged in your account earlier today (10/11/2011).

Aside from this, you have an outstanding balance of $55.75 for your latest bill (81662689744) which is due on 20/11/2011. Kindly settle this as well in order to avoid another late fee.

Thanks for getting back to me. I would like to COMPLETELY cancel the account. As I said I am overseas, and have not been using the number for months. I won't be returning to Australia, so there is no need for a prepaid number. And look to be honest, even if I was still in Australia I would cancel my account. I am not a satisfied Virgin customer in the slightest. Aside from you, customer service has been absolutely horrible, every time I call I get a different answer. Additionally there were always "error" charges on my bills, which makes me entirely suspicious, does Virgin just tack on random fees hoping to dupe people out of their money.

So back to the late fees, I don't want to pay them. It's bad enough paying for a service I don't want. Of course I don't mean to be entirely unreasonable, I am obligated to pay for the full 24-month contract, whether I use it or not. You provide the service, it's up to me to use it. That's fair. BUT as I said, last time I spoke I was told that there was "a note on the system" to cancel my account once the 24-months had ended. You're telling me that this isn't, and never was the case. So from my point of view I was either lied to, or had to deal with an undertrained and misinformed employee.

You're also telling me that I actually DO have to pay for the time that I didn't want, any time after my 24-month ends. And that I'll be forced to pay for an additional 48 hours worth of service too, after this email request is processed. That is not fair in the slightest. But Virgin seems to make the rules, and we are at their mercy.

In my opinion the fair thing would be to either wave any costs after the 24-month period ends, OR wave the late fees instead.

One more thing about these late fees, before my rant ends... Before I left I paid $600 credit, CREDIT mind you, and it took a while for that credit to run out. I got my bill and a few weeks later I paid it. Then the next day I got another bill for $140. And I don't understand why. I assumed that the first payment didn't go through in time, and it was added onto the next bill. But that wasn't a month ago, so why the late fee?

Now I'm in an interesting position. Because I am an American citizen, I can live in America for as long as I want. And aside from the morality, and the legality, I don't REALLY have to give Virgin Mobile any money. The USA would never extradite one of it's citizens because of an outstanding debt. So really, what are you going to do if I don't pay? Send a debt collector? To do what exactly? If I have no intention to return to Australia, then there's no way to make me pay.

Which means, Virgin Mobile is in the position to make things fair for a former customer, or get no money at all. To me, fair is paying the remainder of the 24-month contract, and the late fee of $35 only. NOT today's late fee of $10, and CERTAINLY NOT the time that I did not sign up for. I signed a 24-month contract, which means I am obligated to pay for 24 months only.

I'm sorry to be so rude about this, but Virgin's lack of genuine customer service, sneaky attempt at trying to get extra money out of me, and just plain underhanded tactics has made me extremely bitter towards the company.

Please let me know what Virgin Mobile's plans are. Hopefully they will indeed waive the fee's after the 24-month contract ended, as well as any additional fees from today, and onwards.

We have not received the payment yet. Based on the attachment, it appears that have paid via BPAY. It may take up to 3 working days for BPAY payments to reflect on your Virgin Mobile account. Currently, your account balance is $140.75.

On the other hand, your service was completely cancelled on 13/11/2011. This means that a final pro-rated bill will be generated on your next bill cycle date (03/12/2011). As goodwill, we can waive the final amount once your next bill has been generated. Simply let us know.

After rereading your email, I see that this latest fee is the pro-rated
bill you had mentioned. I had assumed, perhaps foolishly, this was to be
taken care of on your end. I was under the impression that when something is
completely cancelled that meant it was actually completely cancelled. To me
"complete" means it's finished and no additional action would be required.
Obviously you're not an idiot and know this, but it seems that the billing
department does not.

Please do not bill me further.

Additionally I request you to remove ALL information relating to me. I want
you to remove my name, contact information, credit card numbers, BPAY
details, call history, everything. I do not want to hear from Virgin Mobile

I do not want to EVER here from Virgin Mobile again. Ever. That means no emails. No further bills and no sales material. I must insist that I want my information completely expunged from your system. Do not keep my information for reference. You won't need it. I do not want to hear that it's impossible to remove my info. That's bullshit. If it can be entered it can be deleted. It's my information, not yours. If I want it removed it had better be removed. If customer service can't remove it find someone who can. I will not be satisfied until its gone.

I expect 1 more email confirming you're taking the actions I'm demanding. After that no further correspondence is required. You are to delete my emails from your inbox. Your company is bad. They've lied and tried at every opportunity to cheat me out of my money. I do not want them to know my information in case they try further underhanded tactics to swindle me.

So we're getting some negative feedback from our publication. Here's some of my favourite criticisms:

• Love the sentiment behind 'This Year I Will Try Not To' - though I can't help but feel more pursuaded by it if the designers behind this interesting little publication weren't so trendy themselves.. (Clinton Duncan, on Australian In Front)

• This year I will try not to... spell check? (Stuffee, on Australian In Front)

• Mixed feelings about this. Like the idea and some of the examples made me smile – but it feels a bit hypocritical: the muted colour palette, the ‘making of’ vimeo video, the product photography, the condensed sans serif type, the selling of a limited signed booklet… they kind of feel to me like things that could’ve been included in the project themselves. Am I over-cynical? Or is it intentionally ironic? (Luke Tonge, on FormFiftyFive)

• I taste of the mood boring. (Juliano Domingues, on Ideafixa, translated from Portuguese)

• Pra only to justify. I did not find without grace the idea, but the conception. I find that he had been made of exaggerated form, caricata, would be more legal. But the proper conception of the idea, passes a air of “superiority”, and this is place... (Advan Shumiski, on Ideafixa, translated from Portuguese)

And a nice one:
• It was a true nerdy designer moment of hysteric laughter when I came across the project “This year I will try not to” by Elliott Scott and Christopher Doyle. I guess you can call it a contract from two frustrated designers. I think we should all put our signatures on this one and agree with these guys. Super funny! (Inspiration Lab)

Another Saul Bass logo died recently, and I am quite sad to see it go. Look, I know it's only a minor tweak, and in the long run it's no big deal, but the redrawing of the Girl Scouts logo is not as nice as the original. In fact, the original logo was one of my absolute favourite logos, the way it was drawn was perfect in my opinion.

So the question is, who's next? I hope it's not Time Warner or Quaker, although I can that being redone very soon... Such a shame... such a shame. Change for the sake of making something feel modern is fine, but if it ain't broke...

So, you ask, what's been happening you recently? Well, I reply, not a whole lot. But also, quite a lot too.

Firstly I went to New York again! But only for three days, and it was a business trip. Not much time for sight-seeing. I had to open a bank account, talk to immigration lawyers and file my taxes. Why would I do that? Because we're moving to New York in April next year! It's finally happening, we're in the middle of processing the paperwork right now. It's a long, expensive and difficult process, but we've started now.

The stages are:
1. Pay my taxes for the last three years.
2. Apply to sponsor Soryi.
3. Get interviewed, prove we're in a legitimate marriage and are genuinely planning on moving to the states (hence the bank account)
4. Soryi gets a temporary visa allowing her to enter the country (she can't at the moment, even as a tourist, which is why I went alone).
5. Soryi gets a permit allowing her to work.
6. We move there.
7. Soryi gets a permanent residence permit.

While I was there I had a few interviews with the company I'm working at now, everything seemed pretty positive, but nothing guaranteed because it's so far away. I'm hopeful though.

I did have a few spare hours though, and went to the Top of the Rock and a New York deli. Not Katz this time, too expensive, but 2nd Ave Deli, which was MUCH better, and a lot cheaper. Went to Taco Bell as well. It was fun.

I've been getting into photography a lot more too.. We've got a pretty good camera, and I've been playing with it a lot recently. Nothing amazing, but I'm still learning a lot. I've been collecting some vintage cameras too... We've got 15 now.

I went to a work organised Mad Men party last friday. It was fun, drank too many terrible martini's though. Had a hangover, which something I'm no longer used to. For people who don't know, Mad Men is a TV show about advertising, which takes place in the early 60's in NYC. Great show, even better theme for a party. I'm holding a Argus C3 camera in that photo. It was an American-made camera, that model is from 1962. It works, but not very well, too hard to focus and ATROCIOUS in low-light.

That's about it. I'll keep people informed of the visa situation.

YES, THAT'S RIGHT, COLES. The obvious rip-off of Sainsbury's/Waitrose has totally worked. The Ultimo store in the Broadway mall near my office is the latest to get the 'New Coles' makeover, taking it from shitty-shit to super-awesome. No, it's not just cosmetic, it's the way the staff greet you with a (hopefully) genuine smile and hello, to the wider isles, and the samples of foods. It's the number of staff at the deli counter offering advice on a range of cheeses from Europe.

My lunch comes from the following countries: Israel, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands and France, and Australia of course. I also bought some mexican hot-sauce and a few other bits from other places too.

PS. Yes, ok, so people in my office are working on Coles, BUT I'm not, and even if I was, I wouldn't support a company for that reason alone. This new change is truly good.

E: Yeah, a medium...
McW: Meal?
E: No meal. A sausage McMuffin and a medium iced coffee.
McW: It might be cheaper if it's a meal. I check?
E: No meal. Just a medium iced coffee and sausage mcmuffin.

McW puts it through the register as sausage and egg meal.

E: I don't want any egg. Just a sausage McMuffin.
McW: No meal?
E: NO. Can I check that it's a sausage one, and NOT a sausage and egg one?
McW: OK

WARNING: The following involves me yelling in a family restaurant.

I get the muffin, with egg of course, and an iced coffee. I go back to the counter to get a new muffin.

E: What's this? (pointing at egg). I asked for no egg. (pushes muffin at McW)
McW: OK.

WARNING: The following involves me yelling louder and with more profanity in a family restaurant.

I get the replacement muffin. WITH EGG!

E: WHAT THE FUCK!?!
McW: Hmm?
E: I said no fucking egg! I checked with you? Get the fucking manager!
Manager: What's wrong? I gave you a new one? I made it myself.
E: It's got egg in it!
M: I know, I chose the best one we had.
E: I told her, no fucking egg!!!
M: Oh, I thought she said that the egg was no good.
McW: No, you said egg.
E: I said NO egg! I checked with you!
(they talk to each other)
McW: Do we even have a sausage muffin without egg?
E: It's on the fucking menu! RIGHT THERE! Try learning the menu, for fuck's sake!
M (to McW): Next time, try listening.
McW: HERE! (handing me the new muffin)

I get replacement muffin, storm out, throwing the THIRD egg on the ground as I leave.

7.55am: Old lady pushes Soryi and mumbles racist comments under her breath. I politely give her a piece of my mind "GO FUCK YOURSELF, OLD LADY!" I say. And as everyone looks on in disgust I blast them with a gentle "FUCK ALL OF YOU!"

8.47am: Old people are getting on the bus. I am waiting patiently behind them, so that I can put in my ticket. People are pushing behind me, but still I wait. I go to sit down and they're in my way again. I gently squeeze by and get a angered mumble. "WHAT?! GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY THEN!" I reply.

1.34pm: At the bank, waiting in line for 25 minutes. I finally get to the teller and stand hand over money and doing banking things. And an old man stands next to me and starts coughing. I try to ignore him. He stands there still coughing and looking at me. "Excuse me sir, I don't mean to be rude, but could you please step back. I am uncomfortable with you being in my personal space when I am dealing with money" I gently say. "FUCK YOU! I STAND WHEREVER I WANT!" was his reply. "WHAT?!?! FUCK YOU! GET OUT OF MY SPACE!" "YOU HAVE PLENTY OF SPACE! I'M NOT TRYING TO STEAL YOUR MONEY!" he says. "I didn't think you were, I just feel uncomfortable with you standing right next to me!" "YOU BETTER STOP TALKING BEFORE I STOP YOU FROM TALKING" was his response. Now I can't very well beat up an old man, despite him being an insane one. "GO TO HELL SIR!" I say, and storm out of the bank.

Seriously, am I going completely crazy. What the fuck is wrong with the world?! and me?!?!?!

We've been experimenting with an old Pentax 35mm SLR and an old Konica point-and-click 35mm. Both produce photos with some really magical qualities. Really nice.

PS. The ones of me smoking are old. While I do miss smoking sometimes, I haven't had any since the wedding. I promised Soryi I'd quit for her, and I intend on keeping that promise.
