OPERATION CAST LEAD

P1000957

SO ISRAEL is attacking Palestine again. And as a Jewish person, and an American it seems to affect me. Why American you ask? Well for some reason the USA is involved. People are burning American flags.

I'm used to being hated for being an American. That's a dull hated, unspecific and when people think about it it's usually not logical to hate a person because of their countries government action. The anti-American sentiment has been with me wherever I go; Australia, Ireland, UK, Europe. It was kind of refreshing to be in America, where the same anger is actually directed at the government, instead of me, but oh well. At any rate, it's nothing too strong, and I am used to it.

As for the anti-Israel sentiments; that's completely different. Being Israeli, and being Jewish are linked. I am not an Israeli. I have never been there, I have only met a handful of Israeli people. Am I a Zionist? I think I might be. The whole issue is obviously extremely complicated. I am for a Jewish homeland, but for reasons that I have personally never suffered for.

A lot of criticism of Jewish people is because they always bring up past wrongs done to them. Yes, they have had a pretty bad run over the last three thousand years. Not much luck. So they do deserve to be treated extra nice. And part of that means that Israel exists, and exists as a haven for persecuted Jews around the world. I read yesterday that before Israel was established Britain controlled Palestine, and during The Holocaust the British wouldn't allow Jews into Palestine and they died in concentration camps. So WE need Israel. There are plenty of other important and Holy places in the Muslim world, let us have this one place. PLEASE.

But back to the point; we tend to rely on guilt to get our way. And I am not happy about that. And as I said, I have never personally experienced these injustices. So what gives me any right to stand up and defend Israel? I don't have any right. I have no reason to stand up, other than the fact that I am a Jewish person and we should stick together. But do I agree that we should use guilt to convince countries to ignore going to far in retaliation? Or that Israel is justified by our past in treating resistance with an overly heavy hand? No.

Israel has it's purpose, and it stands for something that cannot be expressed. Hope? Safety? Home? I don't know. But don't we already have enough enemies in the world? By retaliating in this way are we not just making things worse? We are not able to destroy all of our enemies, so what are we to do? Even if we destroy the entire Gaza strip, and the West Bank, and kill every single person, then what? Syria, Egypt, Lebanon? The governments of those countries are the least of our fears.

I fear for the worst. I fear that Holocaust could happen again in my lifetime, but it won't be goose-stepping Germans leading us to the camps. It will be enraged Arabs and Muslim people from around the world who are sick of us dredging up the past, and using an extreme branch of Islam as a justification. I fear that America will take sides and Australia will too, and they will support Israel but Muslim people in those countries will not be happy about that and be looking for someone to blame. And that person will be me.

I fear that the only way to protect myself, and the people I care about is with high-powered automatic weaponry, and equal measures of anger, pride and terror. I fear that I will have to kill or be killed, and that WW3 is coming and it will all start very soon.

I can only keep my head down and pretend everything is ok for so long before I'll either have to chose a side, give up, or pick up a gun to defend myself. And Australia doesn't sell guns anymore.

PS> I might be over reacting a bit. Maybe I should stop watching the news.
PPS> The post immediately below this post makes me look insane, like some sort of hyper-sensitive nut. But it also illustrates that Anti-Semitism as acceptable again, and being anti-Anti-Semitic, or being sensitive to Anti-Semitism is being crazy.

AM I CRAZY?

AM I CRAZY?

FROM AN EMAIL TO FRESHJIVE:

Hello.

I found one of your shirts in a store in Brisbane, Australia and was more than a little shocked. I think the shirt requires some explanation. Can you explain to me why your shirt features a graphic that shows striking resemblance to a swastika? I consider myself a reasonable person, so I think it's fair to assume that Freshjive does not actually support the Nazi Party, or any of it's current neo parties. Nor would I assume to believe that Freshjive actually condones the atrocities commited by the Nazi Party.

While it is true that Buddhist cultures, as well as some Native American cultures do use swastikas in their artworks and as decoration, I am not naive enough to believe that this shirt (or anything else for that matter) can use a swastika on a commercial product and think it is an appropriate symbol.

I am a graphic designer myself, I know that sometimes when creating graphics you can miss the forest for the trees. You can come up with an idea that seems cool, and totally loose sight of the bigger picture. That is a reasonable excuse. HOWEVER, it is NOT reasonable for a person in charge of quality control, or in any sort of position of approval to miss such an obvious mistake.

I would like to know what you plan on doing regarding this matter. And I think an apology for such a horrendous blunder is completely within reason. Finally I am going to assume that you will be pulling this shirt from stores, and whoever was responsible for this to be dealt with in whatever manner you see fit.

An annoyed FORMER Freshjive customer,
Elliott Scott

Portfolio Update

Folio_overview

The portfolio has had its most major overhaul in its history. Gone are the magazine elements, and the thing has had a slick new makeover. While I liked the magazine theme, it just isn't that professional, and I'm applying for jobs with the big boys, they might not like that sort of thing. To have a look at what's in the folio, go to the set on Flickr.

I have had the book produced with a thing called Blurb, you can order a copy of it if you want! Not too sure if that link works, let me know if it doesnt. It's kinda pricey, but totally worth the money!

PS. After much feedback, I've been coerced into restarting the blog, so watch this space!

Apologies to the people of the nation of Australia

So we've been back here a week and we've managed to offend everyone with our melancholy attitude, our complaining and our comparing everything to London ( and usually favoring it).

Why would we be like that? Aren't we in Australia? People are beautiful, there's great weather, you're close to the beaches? Shouldn't we be really pleased to leave behind the rainy skies of London?

First of all if we were staying in the center of the city things might be different, but we're about 50km from the city. The closest station is about 8km away from us too. We feel a bit trapped here. The buses from the city stop running at 6.30pm. And they only run once every half hour.

We're staying with Soryi's sister and her fiancee, and they've been great to us. I was surprised by their generous hospitality, without them it'd be much worse. But still, compared to where we were in West Hampstead we're pretty isolated.

I'm working on my portfolio right now and it's not going good. I needed some inspiration so I went to the ONLY design book store in the city and they only had old books and a very limited selection. It's really just a normal bookstore with a small, and crowded by hipster students, section.

I did manage to visit my lecturers from uni. That was pretty cool actually, possibly the most exciting thing I've done since being here.

...

So why am I missing London? Because London is awesome. It feels like there is always something happening, even if I never go to anything. Brisbane feels like... nothing.

The worse thing about being here is: It feels like we never left. Like the last 2.5 years never happened. They were photographs of other people and a notebook full of tickets from trains and busses we never rode. No memories. No interesting stories. Only a mind wiped clean from being here for a week.

We've moving to Sydney in a few weeks. Soryi said she thinks it'll be good, and I told her I agreed. But I fear it won't be good. I fear that it'll be a disappointment too. What if London was the best place I'll ever live? What if those 2.5 years were the best of my life and now I have nothing to look forward too.

Pretty bleak. And a little over-the-top. Sorry.

So blah. I can't upload photo's onto Flickr untill I move to Sydney. But Singapore was nice, not how I remember (and much more boring) but still alright. Estonia was awesome.

Take care everyone.

HERE ARE SOME FAKE AD'S that will be in the new version of the portfolio. Wouldn't it be great if American Apparel (clothing store chain) and AmericanAirlines merged? I reckon it would be. And their identity would be easy to do; both are already Helvetica bold!

Also: Miscommunication is the perfect pagent for sexy design chicks. I'd enter, but I don't think I'd do well in the swimsuit category.

Second-to-lastly: I've redone the ol' Chairmans' Maonnaise joke. Not quite sure about this one. I want it to be more 'funny' than 'political', especially since China/Tibet relations are so topical right now.

We're coming home in mid-October, after 2.5 years of being in the British Isles and visiting Singapore for a week.

Looking forward to seeing all my friends in Australia. And will miss everyone over here.

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY

Graham is looking at the Sea book...

Patrick: What's that then?
Graham: The Sea Book ...
P: Oh yeah... what's it like?
G: Well it's like "100 different ways to use helvetica"
*LAUGHS*
G: Well, to be fair, it's more like the 2 ways to use helvetica.
*LAUGHTER ALL ROUND!*
