COMPUTERS THESE DAYS... UPDATED!!! again...

SUTHPARK-Dermo2

Dermo found an awesome site where you can make your own Soutpark characters using the PPOWER OF FLASH!!! I couldn't find his site, being in Dutch and all, but I did find another one which works just as well.

Let's play some games. Guess who is who?

NOTE: The top one is Dermo. But the game starts here:

SUTHPARK-Me2
A

SUTHPARK-Austin
B

SUTHPARK-Indiana
C

SUTHPARK-Linus
D

SUTHPARK-YourMom
E

Did you manage to guess them all? Probably huh? Well just in case you didn't the answers are in the comments section. If you wanna try the game out for yourself that'd be cool, email your version of YOU and I'll post em up as well! Fun for the whole family. And who said Southpark was dead???!!!

CHRISTMAS IN JULY?

Slave The Whales

Yep, in the everloving niceities? that I am... uh? (where's he going with this?) ... uh... here is a desktop image for the Slave the Whales campaign. I expect everyone to be using this when I come by randomly for my milk and cookies, and the carrot for Rudoulph/Rudolf/Adolf...

Yeah, to download the whopping One-Oh-Two-Four-By-Seven-Sixty-Eight file, click on the word that is underlinned. Duh. Or right-click and hit 'Save to Desktop' or something like that. Alternatively there is an even bigger Twelve-Eighty-by-One-Oh-Two-Four file for you down at the worm. Sorry Linus I tried to make a Sixteen-Hundred-by-Twelve-Hundred file for your mind numblingly teeny-tiny resolution. Painful. Too small. 'Oh so small'. My big American desktop is so biiiiggggg..... ... but I can't get any bigger than 1280x1024

And that's what my ex-wife said

THE TRUTH COMES OUT!

Carson-Sucks

This image is in response to Linus's post on his RIVAL BLOG!!!!!! Elitist Slob, in which he designed some shirts for typo nerds, and had a good ol' rant about modern fashion. I tie the two posts together in one or maybe two words (David) CARSON!

That bastard set back the development of good design and legibility at least 200 years! And those figures weren't made up. Actual facts. Actual. 100% True.

DERMO: The origin of THE GAV SHIRT! The answer we;ve been searching for has been under our noses all along!

NOT GIVING UP

Here's some design concepts I've been mucking around with for some t-shirts. Pay particular attention to the 'Slave the Whales' shirt, if you cast your minds back you might remember that this is my THIRD version of the same idea. I'm determinned, I'm not giving up! I really like the idea (even if you guys don't and the shirt companies don't either! [bastards!])

TokenBlackGuy

I hope this one isn't misconstrued as a racist comment. Black people aren't worth 5 cents, that's not the meaning (oh... uh... I mean black people are obviously worth more than 5 cents. Or rather, just like anyone else they're uh.. priceless. Oh man I'm in big trouble aren't I?) Anyway: It's supposed to mean: TOKEN BLACK GUY. But can be substituted for any other token person. I'm the token ethnic friend amoungst my gang of friends. And there's always a token goth girl somewhere to be found.

Token2

Ok, this is a LOT less racial specific, but at the cost of obviousness of meaning. And the colors are better too.

AxesEvil

Oh I get it! It's mispronouncing Axis of Evil! HAR HAR HAR. Sigh. The hand lettering should make up for the shittitude.

MMLFudge

This one's my favourite. Milk, milk, lemonade. Around the corner's where fudge is made. I hope the meaning is obvious enough. I reckon it is.

SlaveWhales

They may take our land, but they'll never take... our... FREEDOM!!!! Or something equally defiant. I WILL get this produced, even if it kills me!

Ok, there we go. I'm all burnt out now. But gimme some feedback, I could use the advice of others (who are obviously way cooler than I could ever hope to be!)

Thanks,
I'm Elliott Scott, going to go get a coffee it's freakin 5.00am! signing off.

Rebound-Girl

This is getting Re-freakin-diculous! I found myself googling AC to try and find what she's been up to, and maybe some photo's of her. Luckily I couldn't find anything, otherwise I'd have been fixated on it, but you get the point. It had stopped being funny a long time ago, and it's just sad, really really sad. And pathetic. And predicatable too. [in case you didn't figure it out I haven't taken my meds since thursday (left them at work, whoops!)]

So anyway I think I might need a rebound girl. Nothing helps you get over someone like getting under someone, huh!? Wink wink. Although I dunno why I put the winks in, it was pretty damn obvious what I meant.

Anyway, I guess sitting around here ain't gonna get me a rebound girl, but I dunno how one goes about it anyway. And besides it's probably a bit late in the game for a genuine rebound girl, it'd be more like a SNAP-OUT-OF-IT-YOU-FREAKIN-IDIOT girl.

THIS IS FOR _YOU BUDDY - UPDATED!!!

I was trying to find Domino's Pizza coupons when I stumbled across this site:

DeathToComicSans

At first glance everthings fine. General informative site, full of good stuff and discounts and whatnot, but then I realised Comic Sans was EVERYWHERE! And if that wasn't bad enough there was a link to download comic Sans in case you didn't have it on your computer. Well that was the last straw, for the sake of graphic designers everywhere, nay, the world! I had to do something.

The following is an email correspondance. A reply to my latest email is pending, but will be posted as soon as it arrives.

hey.. i've checked out your site OzFree... don't get me wrong, its a good idea... but I am slightly concerned with the choice of using comic sans as your font. It's not a nice font, it makes your site look crude and simple. And that's not good.... maybe try something a bit more professional and credible. Try Arial or Georgia, or even Courier,,,, anything but Comic Sans! It's the root of all evil.

Ok, thanks for the site regardless its very helpful.
Elliott

Hi Elliott,

Actually, OzFree is a hobby website -- I chose the Comic Sans font to
give it a friendlier, more personable feel. It's a big site, and I
didn't want anyone to feel intimidated (hence the choice of pastels
also).

But you raise a good point -- just because I like Comic Sans, doesn't
mean it's for everyone ... I might put it to a poll!

Thanks!

Catherine

I guess theres a time and a place for comic sans. But I really strongly urge you to try something else. I know I and a lot of my other friends wont even look at sites, flyers, posters, etc if it has comic sans on it. there is a real hatred amoungst graphic designers for it. PLEASE I beg you, try something else. PLEASE!!! It's not that your site is bad, or that you made a mistake, it's just that comic sans is NOT a good font. It is VERY poorly made, it's not very legible, the spacings are all outta whack, its just not good. I've heard it a million times "comic sans makes it fun" but it doesnt. It makes it unprofessional. You can have a font thats humanist (ie. not cold and stand-offish) but at the same time not utter shit.

I know there are some extreme limitations for designing for the web, there arent very many fonts to choose from, but microsoft made a giant faux pax when it included CSans in its default list in Internet Explorer all those years ago. Georgia is humanist, but at the same time well done. It offers a warm friendly style, but not at the expense of quality.

check out this site at any rate: http://bancomicsans.com/home.html (in particular check out the Statistics page and the About pages.)

I'm sorry to pester. But I feel compelled. I know it aint any of my business, and I didnt mean to meddle, but I really think itd benefit you (and the rest of humanity!) if you used something else.

From the melodramatic Elliott

Oz Free

------------------------------------------------------

to me
Hi Elliott,

I'm completely open to suggestions with OzFree when it comes to new
links, dead links, or stylistic changes, so please don't apologise.

I've put a minipoll up on OzFree tonight ... yes, using a pop-up
window which I *know* is a terrible thing, but in the past I've seen
that it's the ONLY way to get my visitors to answer a survey that
doesn't offer monetary compensation!

I suspect that the majority of responses will favour your suggestions,
and even I noticed that, when compared alongside the two you
suggested, Comic really does just look like a messy Arial.

But I'll see what the results say, and make the changes as requested
by respondents.

I just wanted you to know that you weren't just "writing into the
ether" -- I *am* listening to what you say!

Oh ... and I'm not sure if the BanComicSans website is yours, but for
what it's worth, the images on the left of that page don't have
"alt-tags", which makes it slightly tricky for people like me who
browse with images turned off by default.

This would affect a far smaller percentage of the population than the
Comic Sans on OzFree, but I just thought I'd mention it.

Cheers,

Catherine / OzFree

A LITTLE EXPERIMENT

Hey guys, I'm just letting you know that I'm trying out the Google AdSense program. Basically the Google dudes + dudettes read my site, and assign advertising based on content. So yes there will be ads on here, BUT in theory those ads should be related to the content. Which is nice. If in theory I'm talking about smurfs or something, then maybe some smurf related ads will be featured. I see it as more a tool than a hinderance. If I end up hating the ads though, I can always remove them.

Don't worry I won't be pandering the the Google overlords. The same ol' useless crap will still be making an appearance. HOORAY!

Thanks for putting up with me.
Oh and also if you wanna click on any of the ads, feel free to, they are REAL ads, not just for show..

ALONG THE SAME LINES

Hey I totally like inspired myself... like.... um.. today with the image I posted earlier (ie. the post below) Anyway i've been trying to do the QCA shirt for... uh... QCA but I couldn't get it right. The idea I had was gonna be pixelrffic but the people in charge of it all (ie. Paul Jolly, Don Welsh, Sebatical, etc) don't like that idea, and being the ones who are in charge (ie. choosing the final design) probably should like it otherwise it won't get used. So anyway I did a new design... sorta and this is it:

QCA-Shirt-Cutout

Basically it's pretty obvious. We (the QCA students and graduates) don't have to wear suits but the other students will (ie. law, accountancy and med students). HA HA to them, and HOORAY for us. Unless you like suits, but that's another post.... At any rate it's kinda literal and obvious but I generally like it. I will be funking it up (ie. making it more funked-up) in the NEAR future, like right now probably but in case I get lazy, you can have a look at my half-finished shizzle ma'nizzle.

TODAY'S POST IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE LETTER G

Cut-Out Girlfriend

G-irlfriend, G-eneric, G-ravity???

Anyway I saw my brother on the train today. He was with his girlfriend. He's sheepishly denied having a girlfriend for ages and when he saw me he didn't introduce her, mention her and looked at me weird when I looked at her. He's a puzzling character. Anyway the thing about her is: she's scarily similar in appearance to Amanda. It's kinda freaky. I dunno how to explain it psychologically without saying this: Oedipus.

In my ongoing battle with self indulgence and egotripping I decided to Google myself again. WEIRD RESULTS. I came up with this.
It's basically a website that has my stuff on it. I'm confused. I tried searching their database for Linus, just in case it searches the whole web or something, but no such luck. Someone must be watching me. I'm afraid. I'm very afraid.

So I wrote them an email, and am waiting for some responses.... I'll post it up if and when I get it.

IRONING OUT THE KINKS

You may have noticed I've already altered the masthead and profile for the blog. I'm still working out what I like and don't like, so things might change a bit in the new few months. But fear not, the same random dose of absolutely nothing worthwhile, and the collasal waste of space that this blog is won't change. HOORAY!

To update you since last we spoke: I've gotten some sleeping pills which may or may not be effective, I haven't figured it out yet. I woke up at midnight usually irrespective of when I go to bed but I hate to think what I'd do if I hadn't taken them?! So that is kinda a bummer. Not getting my goodly hours of sleepage has effected my moods. Been kinda down these last few days (what else is new?)

Kinda disillusioned with Liveworm at the moment. I hate going to work. Of course as soon as I arrive I forget all my worries, but I hate GOING. I never want to get out of bed in the morning. But it's probably because of the sleep lackage, rather than anything bad with 'The Worm'.

I dunno. If I had to sum up my emotions in an emoticon (which we as adults often have to do!) it'd probably be something like this: <[*_*]> A funky robot who is sick of life and its mundanity. HORRAH! You totally can't read that from the emoticon! WOOT!

POST 373

Painting

I can't sleep for some unknown reason. This is the fourth night in a row where I've woken up at 12.30am. It's starting to annoy me. I went to get some sleeping pills the other day and it didn't help. I took one before I went to bed and got up at 11.30. I took another one to get me back to sleep, but it's now 5.00am and I still am not asleep.

I have the sneaking suspicion that they don't give depressed people sleeping pills....

Anyway I want to do another painting. Above is the general plan of what I want. I'll post a picture of the final thing when/if I manage to finish it. I'll do it at work tomorrah. In theory. If I don't fall asleep during the day... which is more than likely.

Ok my peeps, catcha on da' flipside yo! e-dog out.

GREEN LINO, PINK WALLS AND A SOUR DISPOSITION

I had to go see a doctor today. I'm not sick, don't worry, but I did need to talk to him about getting a referal to see another shrink, and to get him to write a letter to the uni saying that I actually AM crazy, and to get some sleeping pills to end this madness!!!!!

Hah! I tricked you didn't I? What I mean is the sleeping pills will help me get some sleep, so I can stop missing classes. Not so I could kill myself.... although.....

ANYWAY

Sick-As-a-Dog

I go up to the counter and the receptionist is very cute. HOT even. Like kinda that sexy nerd look, with the perfect skin and the tied back hair and the sexy glasses. She was VERY cute. So I start talking to her. Sorta kinda trying to flirt... but then I realise... I'm in a doctors office. I'm not well. She has my file. She knows I'm not well. She knows everything about me. Or rather everything bad about me.

Good plan Elliott. What were you thinking?!

I sit down half sulking in my own idiocy. There is a kid sitting opposite me. The sexy receptionist walks by me, my eyes follow. I look back at the kid, he's looking at her too! He shoots a glance at me. He gives me an evil eye. Like I'm oggling his woman.

Well if I can't have her, some snot-nosed little kid can't have her either!*

PS. The chick in the picture is actually not the receptionist. I know, it was so well done, but that image is actually just some wicked photoshopping! Cool huh? Computers.... they're the future.

THE SH*T?, WHAT THE

Let's think back for a second to the assignments I did for last semester. What were the awesome ones, and what were the not so awesome ones? I really was proud of my depression brochure and the Titus and Andronicus poster. I thought they were cool. And the logos, the anti-fur poster and the jorge poster were ok, but not great.

With that in mind, here's the breakdown for my marks:

JORGE POSTER - 90%
ANTI-FUR POSTER - 90%
2 LOGOS - 90%
DEPRESSION BROCHURE - 68%
TITUS ANDRON - 65%

I don't get it. Maybe its like golf or something...

HEY LOOK! IT'S MY SELF DOUBT IN MUPPET FORM (Not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... so to answer question: I don't know). Unless you have high res monitors because you think you're better than society. Cough cough; Glen+Linus. Oh man, I think I might be getting a cold. I keep coughing names.

ANYWAY, I'm in a muppety mood tonight. Dunno why. I guess they're just fun. Kind silly, kinda innoscent and kinda really corrupt. IT'S ALL WRAPPED UP IN A NEAT, LITTLE PACKAGE THEN

Indie-Girl

Let's just bypass the multitude of psychological probelems inherent in the image for a second and move on to less obvious issues for a moment. I promise to return soon...

I was speaking to my psychiatrist the other day about my love life. I said that I feel unworthy of love, and having a girlfriend. I told her that since I broke up with A that I am terribly insecure and not deserving a girlfriend. She, of course disagrees.

She told me something interesting, and at the time I just dismissed it as psycho-babble, but I've thought about it, and perhaps it has some weight to it.

A and I were just kids when we started going out. We were young and experienced with life, and all that goes with that. And we grew up together. This is why I've found it so hard to get over things. In it's truest sense in breaking up with her I've lost my identity, and a major part of ME. We grew up together, side by side, as one person really. My experiences of life were her experiences too. When we began our relationship neither of us knew who we really were, we had no true self identity. We formed an identity with each other, in each other.

So the feelings that I have are more than just understandable, they were inevitable. Of course I feel like I've lost the most important person in my life, because (at the risk of sounding even more self abosrbed than usual) I lost half of my self.

So when you criticise me for not getting over the breakup sooner remember that my situation is probably not like yours. I didn't lose a girlfriend, I lost my identity. A was never a proper girlfriend, dispite what I thought at the time, she could never have been a girlfriend, in order to be in a relationship the two parties need to bring their own elements to the relationship. In a crude analogy imagine my perceived relationship as a party: People go to parties and bring with them their own identities and that makes the party interesting, different people doing different things. We showed up not knowing what to expect, or what to do, and made our own party. Then she left. And a party with one person who doesn't know how to entertain himself sucks.

Just ignore any temptation to take my analogy in the self-pleasuring context, that is NOT what I mean.

Sick sick bastards.

And now it's time to face my demons and talk about this drawing. You could analyse it in so many ways: Let's just first start by saying that 'who needs a girlfriend if you can draw your own?' But more than that let's just look at it from an artistic perspective: Is it drawn well? Did I draw it for that reason anyway? Is it a form of pornography? It's only purpose is to generate arousal? And if this is the case, why is she wearing clothes and posed in a relatively neutral position. No, I don't think it is a pornographic image. BUT why do I continually draw women? Am I trying to fill the void? Perhaps, but obviously this does little more than freak my friends out.

More answers than questions, once again. Remeber that I ran out of my medication on thursday, so this is a somewhat logical downward spiral in emotions.

PS. If someone wants to kill me, please do, consider it a mercy killing.
PPS. I was going to put this title for the post: "If this is not you, applicants for potential girlfriend need not apply". But then I thought that that was just plain mean. And I don't mean the concept of applying for such a thing, just the term need not apply doesn't seem like it's any nicer than we don't want you.

THE THINGS I DO FOR PEOPLE (shakes head in disgust)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ADAM! It's Tanner's 22nd Birthday today, and I want to wish him a happy birthday online. Despite the fact he doesn't read this. um..... yeah..

ALSO: Weirdness. Major Weirdness.

I woke up very much late for work (1.30pm instead of 6.30am) and was supposed to go to work to print Tanners book. CRAP! I get up, have a shower, etc etc, and leave for the bus. Hopefully if I can get the bus that lets me catch the 3.00 train, things will be ok.

I’m walking to the bustop when a car pulls over. An old lady is talking to me, really quietly talking (think Seinfeld and the puffy shirt!) and I’m struggling to hear what she’s saying. I think she’s asking for directions to Southport. I oblige.

But I’m standing in the rain, potentially going to miss my bus and generally struggling explaining/hearing things. I ask for a ride, and I can show them, rather than just explaining.

They agree. I get it. The car smells like old people, of course.

I show them how to get to the main road, and explain how to get to Southport. Except the journey took a lot longer than it needed too. The speed limit for Discovery Drive is 60kph, they were only just over 40. Cars were zooming by. But luckily they were driving in the cycling lane. Most of the journey was peppered with ‘THUMP’ ‘THUMP’ of them driving over the road markers where the cycle lane starts. They didn’t mind, so neither did I. Poor cyclists though.

Anyway I got the train an hour early, they got to Southport. A win-win I guess. As the Simpsons song goes in the musical ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’: “You can always depend on the kindness of strangers!”

Russian-Rocket

A friend of mine (we'll call him Tanner for simplicity's sake) really like Russian Constructivism stylings. Well, actually he really just likes that faux-Russian thang. So for his birthday I've assembled a bunch of cool images and the whatnot, and here is my contribution to the image collection. Nothing too crash hot, but not bad either.

TANNERTECH: We don't make the future. We ARE the future.

Oh and also this is funny:

I LOVE LOCK AND LOL

Lock-&-Loll

I wasn't gonna say anything, but I might anyway. Firstly: This is a test of the new feature from Blogger that allows me to post images a lot easier, hopefully it will be better too. Secondly: This guy is not me. I wish it was though. Third and lastly: Asian people talk funny!! HA HAH HAHAHA! *

PS. Red, black and white are an awesome color combo!
PPS. The Shins are cool. I just found this out. A bit late.

* This was intended as a joke, if you're offended, I'm sorry.

DOUBLE DECODER RINGS!

Psandi

There's no real purpose to this image I guess, it's not really for anything or anyone, and I can't really see it being used in any designs, let's just call it practice. Or fun. Or whatever. I did it to calm down after getting home today. I finally finished the catalog, and having not slept more than two hours a night over the last three nights, I am kinda exhausted. But it's done, and it looks really good. I'm very pleased. And I'm also VERY nervous, what if there is an error, or if it didn't print properley or something...

Anyway this image is a break from staring at text for a week. Images are nice. They don't have spelling, grammar or punctuation errors. They don't have PostScript, TrueType, OpenType, free font conflicts, they are pretty and they are simple. In theory.

This one took just shy of 5 hours, and for some reason I actually did it. I should be sleeping I suppose. But I sorta lost track of time. I spent most of the time in Illustrator drawing the face, and a bit of time in Photoshop blurring some stuff and just generally mucking around. But the result is pretty cool I guess. Nice colors anyway.

No-one in particular, sorta looks kinda like Kate Beckinsale, but not really.

STILL working on the catalog. No sleep for a few days. I figured if I looked like I was awake no-one would ask any questions.

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT

Haunted-House

WARNING: THIS IMAGE HAS NOT BEEN EDITED FOR DRAMATIC EFFECT

I'm in Liveworm working on the catalog that's due tomorrow. And UNG just left. So now I'm all alone. And it's kinda scary. I don't really like it much, I might leave soon. It's not like I can actually work in these conditions (sheer terror + caffeine high + stress). I'll go home, and work there.

THE SAME OL' JOKE

Patronage450

Dermo is my mentor. And I am his apprentice. He is wise. I am dumb. Ecetera ecetera.

Every so often I do a lame design with vector bodies and our faces on it. This time it's Yoda themed.

and no, just for the record, there are never any porn ones. So don't ask.

COUGH COUGH obvious COUGH

pray

On an unually uncaring manner, I really don't feel like doing that catalog. It needs to get done, and all the burden rests on my shoulders, and I SHOULD be doing it, and if I'm not doing it I should go to bed in order to be able to wake up tomorrow and do it, but I just don't really want to do it. And it's not like I'm mad or anything, or resent it (which I am and do), but I just don't care.

I watched Garden State a few minutes ago. That was an interesting and good movie. I really thought it was great. I didn't enjoy it, and it was slow and drawn out, and perhaps a bit obvious and preachey, but I really, really liked it. Zach Braff wrote and directed a good movie. And Natalie Portman was perfect in it too. Good characters, good pace, good everything...

But now I feel so empty, and disillusioned, and meaningless. No, maybe the exact opposite, I feel important, and everything else feels meaningless. The catalog which I was so stressed about doesn't seem to matter anymore. It will get done, one way or another, I have the support of my co-workers and boss, and they will stick up for me. And more than that I know I can do it. I've been in worse situations. And if it doesn't get done, who cares? I don't care. I'll do my best, but if it doesn't get done it will because it can't be done, not because I am weak or I am unable to do it.

Does any of that make sense? Probably not huh.

PS. Ignore the lameness of the joke, and focus on the lameness of the image itself. It'll make you feel better.
PPS. It's purely coincidence that the topic of the post is kinda deep and meaningful, and at the same time the image is about religion. No link intended. But if you want to make that link, that's fine by me.
