UNAMED GIRL GETS ILLUSTRATED

SoryiShirts3B
SoryiShirts3A

SO TECHNICALLY SHE'S NOT 'UNAMED' ANYMORE, she still is the UNG to Mondayne.

Anyway; I'm going to produce a second website, featuring my t-shirts and that sort of thing. I'm liking this stlye at the moment, but when I produce it I'll spend more time developing the illustrations properly, as well as perfecting the light/dark balance of the face. Also, I'll have me in it too, representing the boys.

DINOSAURS LIVED A LONG TIME AGO

DinosaurTree

SO I DIDN'T DO MUCH TODAY AT WORK (not by choice!) aside from corrections to a 98-page document... So I tried playing with information systems. They're something that really interests me, but I've never been given the opportunity to try. so this one is a bit simple and rough, but it's only a few hours of muckin' around. And I got to play with Gridnik!

Make sure you follow the flickr link, it's quite big!

IT'S JUST NOT THE SAME...

MacPc

I prefer the old ones. What about you? Don't even try to get me on some sort of England vs America-type argument, cause it ain't gonna work. I liked the dynamic of the US guys, regardless of where they were from, the USPC guy totally rules. USMac guy was a bit arrogant but still, he was better. Maybe they'll grow on me, but probably not.

PERFECT HOLIDAY DESTINATION

SansSeriffe

The ten years of independence which San Serriffe celebrates today have been a period of economic expansion and social development probably unrivalled by any other new nation. With this achievement has gone a determined attempt, in part successful, to maintain the outward forms of a parliamentary democracy. This special report, edited and introduced by Geoffrey Taylor, attempts to recount the remarkable transformation in the life of the Republic, to inform British investors and visitors of the opportunities which have been and are being created, and not least to encourage companies trading with the Republic to call attention to their share in its development. Rapid growth brings its own problems, not all of which can be solved in total composure. The survey allows some of those problems to be brought under closer scrutiny.

RUMOUR REMOVER

I'LL BE GOING TO NEW YORK THIS MONTH! Some people have asked some questions, which will be answered below:

1. No, I won't be looking for work while I'm there. I plan on enjoying my time there, and acting as a scout for possible intentions on moving there and working if it is good.
2. No, Soryi is not coming with me. I needed to book my ticket by a certain date to get the great deal that I did. Soryi wants to go, but at the time of booking didn't have the money to spend. She does now but has just started a new job so can't take time off yet.
3. Yes, I will be meeting Linus in NY while he's travelling around the world. He will be there before me and after me, and then travel onto Chicago and beyond.
4. As far as I know Linus will not be looking for work in NY. He does has work to do while travelling providing some income, but that work was from Australia, and worked out before he's leaving.
5. Of course I will miss Soryi and wish that was coming too, but unfortunately it didn't work out that way.
6. Yes, I am aware Linus snores a lot, and we will be sharing a room in a hostel, so I will need to buy some gaffer tape.
7. No, I am not moving there permanently. I will be going back to Ireland when the trip is over.
8. No, I don't know what I'll be doing after Ireland!!! Please, I beg everyone, seriously, stop asking. I don't know!

Ok, so that was obviously a bit intense, sorry. I am getting very frustrated/nervous.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

BTTF

SO I'VE SORT OF MADE IT MY UNOFFICIAL POLICY to not dwell on past events (of the negative variety) from the last few years, I did have a refreshingly pleasant visitor from the past, and Australia come to Dublin for the weekend. Bindy, whom you may or may not know, who was a good friend of mine, aside from being best friends with A.

Anyway, she's travelling around the UK and is in Dublin for the weekend and it was great to see her again, after 3 or more years. We didn't talk about the past too much, instead both focusing on a positive future, which is great.

I had weird nightmares last night, but everything worked out well. It was good to catch up, and aside from all the issues, I cared about her a person and counted her as a good friend caught in an unfortunately sticky relationship. But aside from all that it was really nice.

I SAY THE NAME SAYS IT ALL. Who here likes this typeface? Let's battle it out right here, right now.

PHOTOSHOP MYTH 103: SOLVED!

GeorgeW

SO I HEARD THIS RUMOUR that you couldn't scan in money through Photoshop, that the program could count the number of repetitive lines or something and simply not allow you to do it. I also heard that it will let you but only up to a certain resolution.

So in the name of science (well, not science, more mild entertainment) I tried it! I scanned in an American $1 bill, because if any country would be banned by Adobe, it'd be America, at full size, at a resolution of 1500dpi (monitors are 72dpi, and most printed material is 300dpi)

CONCLUSION: Disappointingly, and obviously as you can see the scanned image; it didn't work. Or rather it worked fine. The program allowed me to scan, no watermarks appeared and the resolution was fine. I wanted to be slapped on the wrist by Adobe. Ha! What a push-over.

IT WAS THE BLORST OF TIMES?

InfiniteMonkey

I LIKE THIS. I LIKE THIS MORE THAN I LIKE THE ANALOGY IT REPRESENTS.
If you have an infinite number of monkeys, sitting at an infinite number of typewriters, randomly bashing keys for an infinite number of years, they will write the complete works of Shakespeare. Moreso, they will write it correctly, word for word on the first attempt. In a matter of hours. Crazy no?

It's much the same as my Pi theory from way back when. (November 05?)

IT MEANS FRIEND (updated)

BubblePeople2

SO IF ONLY I HAD A BUBBLE TEA PLACE to pitch my ill-conceived, poorly executed, not worked out idea. Keep watching this space (which you already do right? RIGHT?) for further updates, better work, and maybe even something not horrible. As you might have guessed, work isn't fulfilling me as creatively as I would like, so I spend more time doing personal projects. I'd much prefer personal projects that paid me, but this is good enough for now.

NOW BEFORE you jump up and say something like: "HEY! YOU! Why aren't they holding bubble tea?!" I'm going to quench your answer thirst, or quelch any questions, by pre-replying: "These guys are icons for the website" and complex versions of the logo versions, so they will never be used as part of the logo, so they don't have to be doing or holding anything! ALSO; please raise your hand if you want to ask questions.

ALSO (mainly aimed at Mr. Typo-judgey) don't criticise me for the poorly formed letters, they're ROUGH concepts. You can however criticise the appropriateness of the letterforms, which if you choose to do, I completely agree with. They're not appropriate at all really. Something more suitable would VAG Rounded with negative tracking (maybe -200) and either all-caps or all-lowercase! Hooray! Don't forget maybe a thick keyline around the letters (maybe 2 or 3 if you're feeling nuts) and maybe a drop shadow too. Although I am making a 'subtle' statement about the crappiness of 'fun' design, it really is appropriate and probably what's needed. Oh, and tilted on an angle to make it 'casual'!!!!!

KokeshiNoodles2

NOT SURE HOW, but I'd like to use these ideas one day. They're a Kokeshi doll, which is a Japanese doll that friends give each other. We saw some in Paris, and were VERY expensive, they're just made of wood! and we saw some in Dublin too. Maybe someone in Japan (hint hint) might want to buy one for their super special friend.

Yes, I mean me.

Yes, I know it's a doll.

No, I'm not going to dress it up.

TMS2

THIS WAS AN OLD PROJECT way back in 3rd year university (so very long ago). I think this might have been Linus's pun at the time, but I can't AND WON'T give him credit. Also, in no way is this a racist joke. In fact if you think about it, it's a criticism of the common practice of giving Thai resturants, which otherwise would have been very classy, ridiculous pun names. Eg. Bow Tie (it's in The Valley). Either that or some dreaful COLOR+FLOWER combo: Blue Orchid, Red Lotus, White Orchid, Blue Lotus, etc...

Hunterswood

LASTLY, here is an ad I did for a property company. Originally my boss asked for something different than the usual property ad, and like a fool, came up with this concept. We both knew the client would never choose it, because clients are normally boring, but unlike most clients, they totally loved it! I had done 4 other alternatives, mostly grid based, image based, not relying on any clever idea. I'm glad they chose this idea. I'm actually proud of it too, which is odd for an ad. Ha ha ha! Get it? Last shot? Hunterswood! The pun-ishment is awesome!

"Her name is class. eh?"

I called dcoy demanding an explanation!
"Can I speak to Gavan please?"
"Speaking"
"Hi Gavan my name is Elliott, I'm just calling in response to an email my girlfriend got from you. She sent you a letter of application and her portfolio, and you said that you weren't interested, AND THAT'S FINE. That's not the issue. The issue IS why you would write in an email: 'Her name is class. eh?'."
"Oh, uh... well... 'class' is an Irish word for nice"
"Uhuh, and it wasn't sarcastic at all?"
"No, no. Her work is wonderful..."
"It's not about the work at all. I want you to explain why your personal comments were attached to a professional email"
"Uh.. that's a good question. I don't know"
"I think it's extremely unpro.." *CLICK* He hung up on me.

I called back.
"Hello?"
"DON'T YOU F*ING HANG UP ON ME!!!"
*CLICK*

It takes a lot to really make me mad, but this was enough. And when I'm mad, I get very mad. How dare they make fun of her name, and attach that to her email! For those of you who may want to criticise me for my overreacting antics, Soryi was upset about the email. And unprofessionalism is not cool. Especially when a comment like that may be taken as an insult (even if what he said was true and it wasn't an insult{which is don't believe for a second}). The point is Soryi and myself (and everyone I showed the email to took it as an insult) and she deserved an explanation at least, and preferably an apology.

I'm Elliott Scott, steam blasting from my ears, signing off.

PS. Passion of the Christ ALL OVER AGAIN!
PPS. Victoria Beckham's new book title: "The Poshion of the Spice!" (Hilarious, I know!)
PPS. (About the censoring of the image) Soryi has asked me to block out her personal email and email address. Which is fair enough, it does not affect the understanding of the situation by being blocked out.

THE APPLE

NY-skyline

I'M GOING TO NEW YORK CITY on the 28th of February untill the 6th of March! I'm gonna meet Linus over there and we are going to have awesome times! We've talked about this for 3 years now, and going to NY has been a dream of mine my whole life, and my biggest goal for the last year. And it's FINALLY going to happen! I just booked the ticket €105 each way, €352 including tax for the return! AWESOME!

But I wonder what kind of NY experience we'll have. Personally I hope it's the Woody Allen NY, but there are just so many different New Yorks:

- Andy Warhol (artistic and bizarre)
- Jack Kerouac (50's beat era romantic)
- Louis Armstrong (speak easy's, hooch, dames)
- Friends (Sit-com easy)
- Breakfast at Tiffany's (Classy but poor)
- Frank Sinatra (sleazy & tough, but cool)
- Raging Bull (seedy and dangerous)
- Seinfeld (funny but simple)
- Miracle on 34th Street (childish romantic)
- Beastie Boys (funky but try-hard)
- Midnight Cowboy (rough and sleazy)
- Ghostbusters (scarily fun)
- Rumble in the Bronx (jackie-chan-ariffic)
- The Godfather 2 (depression era italian)
- Superman/Spiderman (epic)

... and last but not least:
- King Kong (most likely)

If you have any other NY's you know of, let me know.

ON THE FIRST DAY of the year we went hiking around Glendalough. When we started out it was very cold but pleasant. We were a bit hungover from the night before but generally in good spirits. We then climbed the mountain next to the river and the icy rocks took all of our energy. We looked down to the valley seeing how far we came... there was a stream running from beneath us and mountains on either side. We then found out the trail went around the mountain, not down it! A 9km walk was ahead of us! And it was getting dark... And cold.

AND DARK!

Wip4out2

OK, so you might be wondering what I'm doing. Aside from fighting off the boredom of the xmas holidays, which aren't that boring really, actually quite fun, anyway; I had an idea of doing a Designer-Republic inspired, Rinzen-ripped-off, WipEout style poster series for my good friend Tanner. It's gone completely out of hand, I'm spending far too long on it, putting in way to much concentration, effort and payed way too many monkeys to do my work for me.

And I'll I've done is a bunch of stupid logo's. At least half of the ones you see here will be scrapped by the final stage because they are bad. They're not TDR enough! MORE TDR I hear you say. Well I must give you (the people) what you so desperately crave. ALSO I can't think of any good team names. But that's just me.

A NEW JORB

I GOT A NEW JOB at a studio called ZINC, I had an interview yesterday. I was really really nervous. I shot myself in the foot when they asked about visa's. And I didn't really talk very well about my work. Anyway I got it, so guess all that is acedemic. I start today. As in I already had my first day, not it's tomorrow. It was good. The place seems really good. And I don't mean they people seem friendly (which they do) or the building and offices are nice (they are) I mean the work is very good, the designers are intimidatingly talented and my boss seems like she knows what she's actually talking about. I think I'm going to be stressed and worried but I think it'll be worth it; I'll learn a lot.

Smackdown

ALSO, like in the last folio I have a designer profile comparing me to another designer, last time it was the asshole Neville Brody*, but this time the victim is the legendary Saul Bass. Dermo and me wrote it after being awake all night watching movies and me working. Here's a transcript:

SAUL BASS
you verti–go girlfriend!
(design legend, inventor of vertigo (the sickness not the film), YR sauce enthusiast.)

date of birth: may 08 19dickety0
place of birth: new york, usa
first design job: a fish menu, ironically consisting solely of bass.
largest client: marlon brando. he just out–weighed alfred hitchock by a few pounds. he used to go to that same seafood restaurant... also, I used to work for al pacino, but there was a lot of overtime involved just when I thought I was out, he pulled me back in!
if you could design with anyone or any studio, who would it be? i’d love to work with the YR sauce company, ‘mmm... that’s good sauce!’
client wish list: hmmm... let’s see... alfred hitchcock! oh no wait...
i’ve already done him!!!!!!
lifelong dream: i’d really love to own my very own bottle or YR.
biggest design mistake: borrowing a bottle or YR and spilling the whole thing. it’s a tough business, but there’s no use crying over spilt YR... (but i did)
any final words? don’t ever work for marlon brando, he’ll have you doing JWT holiday brochures for his damn tahitian island! ‘mmm... that’s good tahitian.’
PS. I love YR!

ELLIOTT SCOTT
that elliott, he’s so scott right now!
(full–time hat wearer, private dancer (dancin’ for money), cloning enthusiast.)

date of birth: 07 may, 198awesome (3)
place of birth: los angeles, usa
first design job: the bauhaus. yeah, you heard, the bauhaus! i basically invented design as we know it today. but of course gropius, or ‘the grope’, as we called him took all the credit. ‘mmm... that’s good gropin’!’
largest client: well, i did this lame stuff for some stupid sauce company, WK i think it was called. man, that was baaad sauce... there this one time, right, when me and my buddy woogie knocked over this kids bottle o’ sauce, and it like broke and stuff. and he was all like crying and shit. it was totally awesome!!!!
if you could design with anyone or any studio, who would it be? i would clone myself six times and work with ‘the elliotts!’ if you want a job done properly, you’ve got to do it yourselves.
client wish list: middle–aged, horny, investors from japan on shore leave
who know how to show a private dancer (such as myself) a good time.
lifelong dream: i am other people’s lifelong dreams.
biggest design mistake: if it isn’t something that is broken, then there is no need to repair it.
any final words? saul bass = suck ass.

IESS 'mmm... that's good acronyming' O

PS. *I ain't got anything against Neville Brody.

THE MORNING LIGHT (NOT A METAPHOR)

FolioNight

I STAYED UP ALL NIGHT WORKING ON MY FOLIO. It feels like it's last year or something. Anyway this is the first working all nighter I've pulled in a year. It's been a productive one though, entirely worthwhile. I did a lot of work last night. And not crappy work either, stuff that hopefully I'll be proud of once I wake up tomorrow after a nights sleep. I guess that's the real test. But at this time of day I'm pretty pleased. I wasn't just laying out the work I'd already done, but fixing up and adding to the old stuff. Here's a small sample of what I did last night. (Admittedly there is something from the other day, but not counting that it's all new, or at least revised and updated...

Stress

SORRY ABOUT NOT REPLYING to your comments, and for not posting all about Paris, but I have been STRESSSED. And not the good stressed where you're busy, but the good-ol-fashioned, self-loathing, downward-spiral, like-I-used-to, insomnia-indusing, pointless-worrying, other-hyphenated-phrases kind that I've mastered over the years*. Let me show you a list of what is stressing me and we can play a game (you read the list, give me much-needed, but obvious advice, and I will endevour to follow said advice but inevitably not follow through with such advice. It'll be fun for the whole family!)

1. Working in the USA. Not going to happen unless some sort of miracle.
2. Working in the UK. All good to go except for a minor technicality which could bring down the whole system.
3. Money. We have a bit left but without a job it could run out soon. Well no, we do have a few months worth, but I'd rather than be saved for travel.
4. Getting a job. Well, I need one, so that's stressing. But not too overwhelming.
5. Getting a good job. This is much more important.
6. My portfolio. I can't seem to get my designs out, in a style I'm happy with. Or that accurately represents my attitude, abilities and desires.
7. My ability. An old but a goldy. I have no confidence left. I don't know how I get like this, but it seems like unless I constantly distract myself with something or other this feeling pops up again and again.
8. The return of my depression. I feel it coming on. I've been trying to cram it back down into that dark hole where it leaves and turns into ulcers, but every night for the last few weeks I've been falling asleep only to wake up with heart-pains and an overwhelming sense of terror. I guess that's more anxiety than anything.
9. Disappointing myself and others. I've got this nagging feeling that if I don't make it to NY or London that I would have not only wasted a year in Ireland, but also missed my only chance for success, happiness and fulfilling my dreams.
10. Guilt for making UNG feel guilty about not being able to go to NY. I know she feels that way, but I don't have any sort of resentment about it towards her. But I feel guilty for making her feel guilty, which I wish I didn't do.

Hooray! Fun times for everyone!
